Modern barn wedding with magical DIY décor in rural Sweden

modern barn wedding in rural Sweden

Gothenburg. It is in the middle of the summer; thriving yellow oat and wheat fields blow in the wind, red barns everywhere. We are situated just right out of Gothenburg on the bride’s family estate and we are about to witness this year’s biggest event – the marriage between Anna and Viktor- a modern barn wedding with magical DIY decor.

When I enter the huge main house in the morning its bubbling with life. Every room is occupied with guests and family from all over Sweden, mostly Stockholm and Gothenburg, that is working with the last details – flowers, food, ironing shirts and dresses, the entertaining. It is a warm, relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

Planning a wedding with short notice

For the past three or four months (that’s how short it took to plan this) Anna and Viktor has been planning and organizing - the barn has been emptied and decorated, food has been prepared and grandmothers old wedding dress altered to fit a more modern-day bride. It is going to be a modern and chick barn wedding with lots of rustic and magical DIY details. The budget is minimal but with their family and friends help they have managed to pull it off. The music is catered by their guests as many of them is working withing the music industry, so from the start until the end there is somebody performing with A-level class.

Portrait session in the old barn

Viktor, the groom, has been hiding in the old playhouse, that has been transformed to the couple’s bedroom, the whole day. Tears of joy are running down their cheeks when they finally meet under the big oak tree. We do the portraits in the barn. It is not long ago since Annas grandmother took care of the cows in here and the thought of that is striking and takes us back to a time that is hard to imagine.

String light decor

The ceremony in held in the old stone church just a five minute’s walk from the estate. It is is joyful with beautiful songs performed by friends. Suddenly the bride remembers she forgot her flower bouquet and bursts out in laughter. The show goes on with a topic to talk about for years. Shortly afterwards the whole wedding party walk together to the wedding venue in the barn that is decorated with lush birch tree branches and lots of string lights.

During the dinner, two moose enters the wheat field right by the venue. The city-slickers cries out their joy, they never seen wild animals so close. Now this is the second topic that will be talked about for years to come. For me, this was the first wedding I photographed.
